Today I’m grateful for the book 59 Seconds: Think a Little, Change a Lot by Richard Wiseman.

I started thinking about it again yesterday when a comment was left on this blog.  After that, I found an excellent summary of the gratitude exercise from 59 seconds on Benjamin Spall’s liferapture.com.

For those of you who know me, I used to be quite the self-help nut, and was pretty deep into a whole lot of pseudoscientific, quantum fieldy, law of attraction, spiritualistic stuff.  When I finally opened my eyes and saw my own delusions, I wondered what I could do that was based in reality when it came to personal development.

Wiseman’s book showed me that there was plenty I could still do – and I wouldn’t even have to spend a thousand bucks on a seminar or risk my life in a sweat lodge to grow.  This was stuff that was backed by real scientific studies, not based on a story that was told so many times that people were believing it as fact, even though it never happened.

So while Operation: Gratitude (formerly A Time for Gratitude) was inspired by Daniel Brenton, the credit for giving me a reason to continue goes to Mr. Wiseman.

  1. For me 59 seconds is not enough because I have so many things to thank for. This book seems a good read..thanks for sharing.
